Project overview
Team Project

An app that helps users compete with their friends to accomplish goals. “Buying in,” they can motivate themselves with monetary gain.

Opportunity

Many  people want to set and accomplish goals to help them progress to a better self. They also have a hard time accomplishing those goals. A lot of times, groups of friends have similar goals.
We set out to create something that would motivate people to be their best selves, to compete with their friends, and to make money while doing it.
How we got here
Assessing the Problem

— We found that a lot of people like to set goals for themselves, but rarely complete those goals.

— A quick survey told us that people are more motivated to complete goals if they receive a monetary reward.

— To solve the problem of helping people to accomplish their goals, we began planning how to motivate through monetary gain using the “Sprint” method.
Competitive Research

Researching similar apps helped us to see what was already out there, and take note of the good and the bad.
Creating Sprint Goal/Question

Asking “How might we” helped us determine a goal. Asking “Can we” helped us ask a sprint question that will keep us on track.

Our Goal:
Users will be able to easily create and manage goals. They will recieve a healthy reward upon goal completion.

Our question:
Can we create a template for setting & organizing goals?

Sketching/Storyboarding

Sketch Flows
Figure Out Areas of High Interest
Create User Journey
Storyboard Prototype
Prototyping and User Testing

Positives:
Interface was well recieved.
Users like the concept.

Negatives:
People thrown into random groups.
Information not clearly explained.
Buy-in was confusing, and users didn’t see the motive.
adapting to user's needs
The Second Sprint

Organizing notes from the users we tested showed us problem areas to focus on for our next sprint. The main thing is that we wanted people t o come back to keep using the app.
Our Goal:
Users keep coming to the app to compete in and find new goals with friends and community.

Our Question:
Can we keep users coming back to the app?
A Sketch to Fix What Went Wrong

To help alleviate confusion we added contest info such as the buy-in price, duration, and other important info on the screen where they would initially be choosing a goal. We also made some slight tweaks to the competition dynamic to make it more simple and understandable.

We also got feedback on being placed in a random group. Users were more inclined to want to compete with their friends, rather than random people. We included an opportunity to invite friends in this flow so that people could have that option as well.
Storyboarding a new flow
What Our Users Taught Us

Positives:
People like money as motivation.
Competition was very well recieved.

Negatives:
Not enough money.
Users not able to clearly see how the rest of the group is doing.
Users still having issues with being in a group with random people.
new feature
With this sprint, we decided to add the feature of being able to create your own group, because we got a lot of feedback telling us they would rather be in a group they could make with their friends.

How to Include a New Feature

We sketched more ideas as a group to figure out the best way to include this new feature.

onboarding
Success Brings Success

With the addition of the create a group feature, we were rolling smoothly. A few onboarding screens helped to make the app feel a bit more complete.
In our last round of user testing, we found that all users were very satisfied with the onboarding experience. We have a long way to go, and much more testing, but feel that we have a valuable product.

So, what's next?
In the future we hope to imlement more specific settings for group competitions. Such as: determining how winnings get dispersed, and making more functionality on the user’s profile page so that the user can get a clear idea of how they are doing in comparison with others at a glance.

We also hope to make it more accessible for companies to use it for company challenges.
